Melanie Corbett

Hello there and thanks for stopping by... I am Melanie the owner of Lotherington's Flowers and Gifts, one of the oldest and largest flowers shops serving Cape Breton Island. Nestled in a quiet Ashby neighborhood in Sydney, Nova Scotia. As a child I developed an early passion for creativity thanks to my grandmother Sophie. I couldn't wait to pack a bag and arrive on her doorstep to see what new art supplies she came across for me. She would fill my old wooden desk with markers, construction paper, glue, paint, clay and glitter. She found beauty in every weed and had such an appreciation for nature. I remember going through old books and finding pressed leaves and flowers. It didn't matter how much of a mess I made creating to her everything was a masterpiece. Growing up my home was also referred to as the "do drop in," always the spot where family gathered and neighbors dropped by. My "Gram" aka Kay was always in the kitchen baking and planning the next meal. Food was her love language. You simply could not visit without having a quick bite or the very least a warm tea biscuit with homemade jam and a cup of tea. Holidays were my absolute favorite, putting up decorations, surrounded by cousins, and opening her china cabinet to set the table with Grams good dishes. I later inherited her love for entertaining; my home is now the place where teens come to hang out, grab a bite to eat or kick back and chat. I was also fortunate enough to inherit her ability to always save room for dessert. Looking back, I guess it's not surprising I spent 25 years in hospitality and restaurant management while raising my greatest joys Cohan and Sophie with my high school sweetheart Ian. My creative side developed into many hobbies, party planning, cake poppin, and a love for renovating. There is something about chaos and mess, building old into new, and rising to the challenge that bring pure joy and excitement. Three years ago, I began to feel the desire for change and an unexpected opportunity lead me through these very doors, after a quick visit, much thought, and a family discussion I decided to jump out of my comfort zone and into my next chapter with nothing more than a dream and possibilities. After a few years in the floral industry and the sale finalizing I am beyond excited and eager to take on my next adventure. It's time to bloom where you are planted. Thankfully I am surrounded by some of the most creative, talented and dedicated staff. They are always willing to go the extra mile, lend their knowledge, and work tirelessly during busy holidays. The only thing more important than liking what you do is liking the people you do it with and I can't thank you all enough. One of my favorite things as the new owner is hearing about all the history of Lotheringtons. I love when customers share their family moments of parents, grandparents, wedding bouquets, anniversaries and special milestones. Even through location and named changes Lotheringtons still remains a family owned and operated floral shop for almost 5 decades because of their deep community roots. My goal is to continue those traditions with my family. My daughter Sophie has shown a creative eye for designing and can be seen in the shop helping during holidays and busy times, my son Cohan enjoys helping out with deliveries and greeting customers, and with all new adventures comes change and growth. Ian thank you for seeing my vision, believing and encouraging me and tackling the honey do list, because we both know this is just the beginning. If you made it this far reading thanks for taking the time to get to know me and if you are in the neighborhood, please stop by the shop at 174 Ashby Rd. to say Hello!!! With that all said let the adventure begin.....
